Plants stiff, usually yellowish, glossy, in loose tufts. Stems prostrate, irregularly branched, often erect-spreading at ends and forming acute apices. Leaves elongate rounded-ovate, concave, sometimes elongate-plicate, densely or loosely imbricate, obtuse or shortly acute at apex; margins often incurved at base, upper margins sometimes involute, serrate or projecting; costae double or reduced; laminal cells linear or elongate-rhomboidal, walls often slightly incrassate, smooth; basal cells gradually becoming shorter, thick-walled, pitted; alar cells subquadrate, often orange-red. Dioicous. Inner perichaetial leaves erect, broadly ovate-lanceolate, entire, not plicate. Setae slender, elongate, brownish red; capsules oblong-ovoid or shortly cylindrical, sometimes with a clear apophysis, erect-spreading or slightly pendent; annuli not differentiated; opercula conic, shortly rostrate; peristome double; exostome teeth narrowly lanceolate, trabeculate, margins slightly forming a light colored border, outer surface densely reticulate, often papillose at apex; endostome segments yellowish brown, often perforated along median line; basal membrane moderately high; cilia 1–3. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth. Spores spherical, finely papillose, 10–20 µm in diameter.
