Plants usually large, dark green, in tufts. Stems (fertile or infertile) erect, 5–8 cm high, mostly not branched, with dense, reddish brown rhizoids at base, sparsely foliate above. Leaves broadly elliptical, oblong-ovate or nearly rounded, crisped when dry, spreading when moist, narrowed and slightly decurrent at base, obtuse at apex; margins not clearly bordered, serrate, single-toothed; costae ending just below the apex; leaf cells obliquely rhombic or hexagonal, thin-walled, not thickened at corners; marginal cells unistratose, obliquely rectangular. Dioicous. Setae straight, reddish brown; capsules cylindrical, horizontal or pendulous; opercula conic, not rostrate.
