Discussion:

Pseudopohlia is a genus four species, three of which Andrews (1950) suggested may be identical. The genus has an unusual peristome. Its exostome teeth are pale, papillose below, vertically striate above, and united in pairs. The endostome is irregularly developed with a low basal membrane and poorly differentiated cilia and segments. Other distinctive features of Pseudopohlia include the presence of bulbil-form gemmae in the leaf axils, well-differentiated basal leaf cells, long, flexuose setae, low (nearly flat) opercula, and coarsely papillose spores.  Pseudopohlia is gametophytically and sporophytically close to Pohlia subgenus Nyholmiella.

Leaves erect to erect-spreading when wet, lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, weakly decurrent; apices acuminate; margins plane, erect to narrowly recurved above, denticulate to serrate, entire to serrulate below; costae single, ending below the apex to percurrent; cells smooth, firm-walled, upper cells elongate to linear-rhomboidal, basal cells subquadrate to short-rectangular. Bulbil-form gemmae often in leaf axils. Dioicous. Setae elongate, flexuose. Capsules erect to inclined; exothecial cells rectangular-elongate with sinuose walls; annuli revoluble; stomata superficial; peristome diplolepidous, exostome teeth united in pairs ½ or more their lengths, papillose below, vertically striate above, not bordered, trabeculae weakly projecting, endostome irregular, basal membrane low, segments flat, not or narrowly perforate, cilia irregular. Spores papillose. Calyptra unknown.
