Plants small to medium-sized, dull, in erect, loose tufts. Stems simple or sparsely and irregularly branched, central strand well-developed, rhizoids at base. Leaves erect to erect-spreading when wet, lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, weakly decurrent; apices acuminate; margins plane, erect to narrowly recurved above, denticulate to serrate, entire to serrulate below; costae single, ending below the apex to percurrent; cells smooth, firm-walled, upper cells elongate to linear-rhomboidal, basal cells subquadrate to short-rectangular. Bulbil-form gemmae often in leaf axils. Dioicous. Setae elongate, flexuose. Capsules erect to inclined; exothecial cells rectangular-elongate with sinuose walls; annuli revoluble; stomata superficial; peristome diplolepidous, exostome teeth united in pairs ½ or more their lengths, papillose below, vertically striate above, not bordered, trabeculae weakly projecting, endostome irregular, basal membrane low, segments flat, not or narrowly perforate, cilia irregular. Spores papillose. Calyptra unknown.
