Discussion: The genus, characterized by leaves abruptly lance-subulate and wide-spreading from a broad, high-sheathing base, resembles Symblepharis (of the Dicranaceae), but that genus has smooth leaf cells and clustered sporophytes. Pseudosymblepharis is intermediate between Tortella and Oxystegus, which also have plane leaf margins and, often at least, inflated basal cells. The broadly sheathing leaf base provides the major distinction from Oxystegus.
