Plants medium-sized to rather large, to 6 cm high, green to yellowish brown, in loose or dense tufts. Stems erect, simple or irregularly branched; in cross section distinctly triangular, central strand absent. Leaves in three ranks, loose, widely spreading when dry, reflexed to squarrose when moist, ovate-lanceolate, strongly keeled above, sheathing at the base, somewhat decurrent; margins plane, entire; costa stout, excurrent in a short awn; in cross section 2 stereid bands present; upper leaf cells quadrate to short-rectangular or irregularly hexagonal, smooth, somewhat hyaline, irregularly thick-walled, trigonous, weakly porose; basal cells linear-rectangular, several rows of cells at the margins linear, smooth, thick-walled, often porose. Dioicous. Setae elongate, straight; capsules erect, ovoid to oblong-ovoid; peristome teeth absent; annuli none; opercula conic-rostrate, with an erect or oblique beak. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth. Spores spherical, brownish, almost smooth.
