Plants medium-szed, in tufts, green to green-blackish above, red to reddish brown below. Stems erect, irregularly branched, hyalodermis and central strand present; sparsely to densely radiculose, rhizoids large, red, smooth. Leaves erect, somewhat sheathing at base, twisted and appressed-incurved when dry, spreading to squarrose when wet, lanceolate, keeled; apices acute; margins recurved below, sharply dentate to erose-dentate above, not bordered; costa excurrent as a sharp, smooth mucro, guide cells and two stereid bands present, ventral epidermal layer absent; upper cells firm-walled, oblate to irregularly quadrate or rounded-hexagonal, pluripapillose, bistratose in streaks or in patches, basal cells long-rectangular, smooth, thin-walled, alar cells short-rectangular to quadrate. Dioicous. Inflorescences terminal; perichaetial leaves convolute. Setae elongate. Capsules cylindric; opercula conic-rostrate; annuli well-developed; peristome absent. Calyptra cucullate.
