Plants small to medium-sized, sometimes to rather large, to 5 cm high, soft, yellowish green to brownish, in loose or dense tufts.
Stems erect, simple or rarely branched by new growth; central strand absent.
Leaves contorted-curved to strongly crisped when dry, spreading when moist, lingulate or ligulate to elliptic-lanceolate, narrowed at the base, obtuse to rounded apiculate or broadly acute; margins plane or somewhat recurved below, entire to crenulate or denticulate above, sometimes bordered by several rows of thicker walled cells; costa slender, percurrent or ending in a few cells below the apex; one stereid band present; upper leaf cells rounded quadrate to irregularly hexagonal, thin- to moderately thick-walled, smooth; basal cells rectangular, somewhat enlarged, thin-walled, smooth.
Dioicous.
Perichaetial leaves not much differentiated.
Setae elongate, straight; capsules erect, oblong-ovoid to short-cylindrical; annuli differentiated, of 1–4 rows of vesiculose cells; opercula conic-rostrate, with an erect or oblique beak; peristome teeth absent.
Calyptrae cucullate, smooth.
Spores spherical, brownish, smooth or finely papillose.
