Notes:
The genus, similar in aspect and gametophytic morphology to Leptodontium and Leptodontiella differs by the unique peristomial features, 16 highly divided, spiculose teeth with short filamentous segments along the margins. Trachyodontium is also similar to Streptotrichum and both genera are found on bamboo nodes, but the former differs in having a distinct marginal leaf border. It is apparently very rare, known only from a single collection by T. Herzog along the upper slopes of the Bolivian Cordillera Oriental northeast of Cochabamba made in the early part of the 20th century, and more recently from the department of La Paz.
