Plants rather small to medium-sized, in loose or dense, dull, green or yellow-green tufts. Stems simple or branched, rosulate-foliate. Leaves larger and more crowded above, strongly incurved-contorted and tubulose when dry, erect- to wide-spreading when moist, narrowly lanceolate from a narrow, erect base, blunt or acute; margins erect or incurved above, generally denticulate toward the tip; costa broad, flat, ending at or near the apex, with 2 stereid bands and median guide cells; upper cells small, rounded-quadrate, obscure, bistratose except in narrow marginal zones, mammillose-bulging on the upper surface, plane on the lower; basal cells oblong, hyaline, thin-walled. Perichaetia terminal, with leaves not much differentiated. Setae elongate, flexuose; capsules erect or slightly curved, narrowly cylindric; peristome teeth divided nearly to the base into 32 filiform, densely spiculose segments, straight or ± twisted together. Calyptra cucullate.
