Plants very small, 1.5–4.0 mm high, green to yellowish green, in low dense tufts.
Stems erect, simple, rarely branched by new growth; central strand present.
Leaves usually tubulose, erect-curved when dry, spreading when moist, oblong-ligulate to spathulate, often plicate near base, bluntly apiculate or rounded-obtuse at apex; margins plane or broadly and weakly incurved, entire or finely crenulate by projecting papillae; costa slender, subpercurrent to percurrent or shortly excurrent in an apiculus; in cross section only dorsal stereid band present; upper leaf cells small, rounded hexagonal, rather thin-walled to thick-walled to weakly trigonous, papillae absent or sometimes bulging or mammillose; basal cells differentiated, enlarged, rectangular, thin- to thick-walled, smooth.
Autoicous.
Perichaetial leaves not much differentiated.
Setae very short, 3–7 mm long, yellowish; capsules erect to suberect, ovoid to cylindrical; annuli differentiated, of 2–3 rows of strongly vesiculose cells, deciduous; opercula conic-rostrate with a rather long beak; peristome teeth 16, short, erect, linear-subulate, faintly papillose or densely papillose.
Calyptrae cucullate, smooth.
Spores spherical, small, yellowish, usually smooth.
