The Leptodontaceae contain 3-4 genera and about 16 species rather widely distributed in temperate and tropical forested regions (Goffinet et al. 2008). In the Neotropics one genus and three species are recorded. The family was previously placed in the order Leucodontales, presently positioned in the Hypnales. Forsstroemia is about to be subsumed into the Neckeraceae.

 

Leptodontaceae contiene 3-4 géneros y 16 o más especies distribuidas muy ampliamente en regiones boscosas templadas y tropicales; en el Neotrópico tiene dos géneros y cuatro especies. La familia está localizada en el orden Leucodontales. Los géneros de Leptodontaceae han sido, y aún son, localizados por algunos autores en Leucodontaceae.
