general taxon notes:
This species is very close to Thuidium kanedae, but the latter species has central strand and ciliate inner perichaetial leaves.

Thuidium brevirameum Dix., Rev. Bryol. Lichénol. 7: 112. 1934. Type. China: Liaoning (Ryonei), Mt. Koô (Fenghuang), Kobayashi 3891 (holotype BM); Kobayasi 3899a, 3914 (paratypes BM).
 
Plants rather robust, up to 5 cm long, mostly brownish, green, in loosely interwoven mats. Stems creeping, regularly bipinnately branched; branches remote, ca. 0.5 cm long; central strand absent; paraphyllia sparse, foliose or filamentous, branched, unipapillose. Stem leaves incurved when dry, erect-patent when moist, abruptly narrowed from a cordate-ovate or cordate base to a hyaline, lanceolate apex, ca. 2 mm long; margins serrulate or entire; costa reaching middle or 2/3 the leaf length, papillose on the back; median leaf cells oval to oblong, 5–20 µm long, thick-walled, with a single stellate papilla; branch leaves concave, ovate to broadly ovate, 0.8 mm long, costa reaching upper portion of leaf. Dioicous. Inner perichaetial leaves ovate-lanceolate, margins entire, costa ending above the middle of leaf. Setae yellowish brown to dark brown, 2 cm long; capsules ovoid; exostome teeth broadly lanceolate, reddish brown, papillose above; endostome segments as long as the exostome teeth, finely papillose; basal membrane about 1/2 the length of endostome segments; cilia 2–3. Spores 12–15 µm in diameter, finely papillose.
