Plants small, less than 10 mm high, yellowish green above, brownish below, in dense tufts or clustered-compact. Stems erect, branched by innovations. Leaves twisted when dry, appressed or spreading when moist, oblong-ovate to ovate, acute or acuminate, ca. 2–3 mm long; margins entire or serrulate in the upper part, somewhat recurved below the mid-leaf; costae long-excurrent, ending in long awns, smooth or dentate, reddish brown at base; median leaf cells oblong-hexagonal or oblong-elliptical, 26–47 µm × 11–15 µm, thin-walled; upper cells more or less thick-walled; basal cells rectangular, thin-walled, usually somewhat reddish, marginal cells becoming narrowed, borders not or indistinctly differentiated by 2–4 rows of slightly narrower cells. Synoicous. Setae 10–30 mm long, straight or curved, reddish brown; capsules inclined to pendulous, pyriform to elongate-ovoid, 2.0–3.5 mm long, dark brown; mouth of capsules narrower than urn; opercula conic, shortly rostrate; exostome teeth yellowish brown; endostome segments often adhered to the teeth, more or less rudimentary. Spores 21–38 µm in diameter, papillose.
