Plants small, ca. 10 mm high, more or less tinged with reddish color, in loose tufts. Stems erect, usually simple, with brownish, papillose rhizoids. Leaves sparse on stems, appressed or slightly twisted when dry, erect-spreading when moist, ca. 1–2 mm long, ovate-lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, broader in the middle, narrower at base; margins entire below, serrulate near the apex, bordered by 1–3 rows of narrower cells, dark in color; costae shortly excurrent, ending in short awns; median leaf cells rhombic, 36–99 µm × 12–21 µm, thin-walled. Gemmae on rhizoids, nearly spherical, 150–220 µm in diameter, dark reddish brown, with short stalks, surface of gemmae convex, without leaf primordia. Dioicous. Setae to ca. 30 mm long; capsules pyriform. Spores 12–14 µm in diameter.
