Plants small, up to 10 mm high, deep green to blackish green, not particularly glossy, in tufts. Stems often branched by innovations, sometimes with gemmae on rhizoids, reddish brown, spherical, 110–200 µm in diameter. Leaves twisted or flexuous when dry, spreading when moist, lower leaves rounded-ovate to oblong-ovate, acute; costae percurrent; upper leaves obovate, oblong-ovate to ligulate, widest in the middle, ca. 1.4–3.0 mm long, shortly acuminate; margins plane or slightly recurved below, indistantly bordered by 1–2 rows of narrowed to linear, yellowish cells, serrulate above, not decurrent at bases; costae shortly to long-excurrent; upper and median leaf cells rhombic, oblong- to rounded-hexagonal, 45–70 µm × 15–22 µm, thin-walled; basal cells larger than the cells above, oblong-hexagonal to short-rectangular. Dioicous. Setae up to 25 mm long, twisted, reddish brown; capsules inclined to horizontal, narrowly elongate-ovoid or club-shaped, reddish brown; neck distinct, shorter than urn, shrunk when dry; opercula shortly apiculate; exostome teeth yellowish brown below; endostome segments widely perforate; basal membrane ca. 2/3 the height of teeth; cilia 2–4, nearly as long as the segments. Spores 10–16 µm in diameter.
