Discussion:

Zygodon pungens is an inconspicuous moss that usually grows in scattered clumps of 1 to 10 plants. It and Z. gracillimus are the only Central American species of Zygodon section Bryoides Malta. These regional species of sect. Bryoides are small plants with markedly enlarged basal cells near the costa, and double peristomes with 16 stout exostome teeth that are united into eight pairs. This section was used by Malta (1926) for a group of smooth-celled Zygodon species, and this is also how Goffinet & Vitt (1998) define the segregate genus Codonoblepharum. Zygodon pungens and Z. gracillimus are gametophytically close. Zygodon gracillimus differs from Z. pungens by its shorter (ending 4–10 cells below the leaf apex) costae, dioicous sexual condition, longer (4–6 mm) setae, and somewhat longer (1–1.3 mm) capsules.

Although Z. pungens is autoicous and fruits frequently, without sporophytes the species could be confused with Daltonia which has the same habitat, plant size and a tendency for enlarged basal cells near the costa. The gametophytes of Daltonia differ from Z. pungens in having slender, subpercurrent costae, and longer, thinner-walled upper leaf cells.
