Annotation: By citing Leskea tamariscina Hedw. (1801) in the protologue for Hypnum tamarisci Sw. (1806) Swartz might appear to be creating either a superfluous name or a combination in Hypnum for Hedwig's epithet. However, in this publication he reverted to the original spelling for this epithet (1788, prior to the starting date for mosses) and discusses only material from Jamaica, Mauritius, and the Pacific Islands. Even though Hedwig cites Swartz's earlier name, his description was based on different material from New Zealand ("Insulae Australes") and the illustration of these plants in Sp. Musc. Frond. (t. 51, f. 1–7) was later selected as the lectotype for his name (Kruijer 1995). Furthermore, Swartz's Jamaican plants and Hedwig's New Zealand plants belong to two very different taxa and Swartz's reversion of the spelling of the epithet combined with no mention of "Insulae Australes" in the protologue have been interpreted to imply that he is excluding the New Zealand material from his name (Art. 52.2e, Melbourne Code). Therefore, Hypnum tamarisci Sw. (1806) is a validly published new name with priority from that date.
