The distinguishing feature and good field character for Leptodontium erythroneuron is the red costa which contrasts notably with the green or dark green leaf lamina. The type of this species was collected by Herzog from San Benito during his first trip to Bolivia (Department of Cochabamba).
 
La característica que se observa fácilmente en campo y que distingue a Leptodontium erythroneuron es la costa roja que contrasta notablemente con la lámina de las hojas verde o verde oscuras. El tipo de esta especie fue colectado por Herzog en San Benito durante su primer viaje a Bolivia (departamento de Cochabamba).
