Ecology. Open Yungas and Tucuman-Bolivian montane; on humic soils and logs. Elevation. 1800-2600 m. Distribution. Bolivia: Chuquisaca, Cochabamba, La Paz, Santa Cruz. World range: Costa Rica, tropical Andes, and southeast Brazil.
 
Ecología. Montano abierto de Yungas y Tucumano-boliviano; sobre suelo húmico y troncos en descomposición. Altitud. 1800-2600 m. Distribución. Bolivia: Chuquisaca, Cochabamba, La Paz y Santa Cruz. Distribución mundial: Costa Rica, Andes tropicales y sureste de Brasil.
 
Leptodontium filicola is similar to L. planifolium, both species exhibit a hyalodermis, a broad, wider than high, costa (cross-section), and distal stems usually highly modified with differentiated leaves and numerous propagulae; L. filicola differes by the elliptical costa, and ending 2-3 (4) cells below the apex, L. planifolium the costa is reniform in shape, and ending well below the apex, by 6-12 cells. The type of this species was collected by Herzog along the trail from San Mateo to the crest of Sunchal, in the Serranía de Siberia (on the border of the departments of Cochabamba and Santa Cruz).
 
Leptodontium filicola es similar a L. planifolium, ambas especies presentan hialodermis, costa ancha, más ancha que alta (en corte transversal), y porción distal de los tallos generalmente muy modificada con hojas diferenciadas y numerosos propágulos; L. filicola se diferencia por tener costa elíptica, terminando 2-3 (4) células debajo del ápice, L. planifolium tiene la costa reniforme y terminando muy por debajo del ápice, 6-12 células. El tipo de esta especie fue colectado por Herzog a lo largo del camino de San Mateo a Sunchal, en la Serranía de Siberia (en la frontera de los departamentos de Cochabamba y Santa Cruz).
