Leptodontium syntrichioides is characterized by the large plants, stems to 10 cm, with small thick-walled epidermal cells (viewed in cross-section), leaves spreading-recurved when wet, ovate- to oblong-lanceolate, 4-7 mm, base sheathing stem (ca. lower 1/3 of leaf), margins recurved to 2/3-4/5 of leaf length, distal 1/4 dentate, costa subpercurrent, in cross-section with 1 ventral and 2 dorsal layers of stereid cells, upper cells bulging, papillae low, branching (crown-like ring ) and speculate, and inner basal short to long rectangular, lightly papillose. Leptodontium laticuspes Broth., collected by Weberbauerin 1902 in Sandia (Puno, Perú), is a synonym.
