general taxon notes:
The leaf shape of this species varies greatly. The leaf apices can be acute or obtuse. The strongly secund leaves toward one side and short leaf cells (10–12 µm long) projecting at upper ends make this species distinct.

Bull. Torrey Bot. Cl. 84: 290. 1957. Pseudoleskea incurvata (Hedw.) Loeske, Hedwigia 50: 313. 1911. Leskea incurvata Hedw., Sp. Musc. Frond. 216. 1801. Type. Europe.
Plants medium-sized, dull, in dense mats. Stems flexuous, up to 3 cm long, loosely to densely subpinnately branched; branches simple, ca. 5 mm long, with dense leaves; paraphyllia lanceolate, abundant on stems, few on branches. Stem leaves appressed on stems when dry, obviously secund, obliquely arranged when moist, obovate-lanceolate, concave, acute or gradually to mucronate, 0.9–1.2 mm × 0.5–0.6 mm; leaf margins recurved, somewhat toothed at leaf apex; costa thick, strong, nearly percurrent, with small teeth at back surfaces; median leaf cells varied greatly in shape and size, from rounded hexagonal to oblong, 10–12 µm × 4.0–4.5 µm, projecting at upper ends, somewhat thin-walled; upper cells long; basal cells hexagonal, thin-walled; alar cells subquadrate, thin-walled; branch leaves similar to stem leaves. Dioicous. Inner perichaetial leaves oblong-lanceolate, acuminate, up to 0.8 mm long, costa weak. Setae dark brown, ca. 8 mm long; capsules pendent, obovoid to ellipsoid, ca. 1.0 mm long, 0.6 mm in diameter; peristome double; exostome teeth lanceolate, 0.35 mm long, densely striate below, verrucose above, lamella high; endostome segments as long as the exostome teeth, linear-lanceolate, folded, verrucose; cilia absent. Spores 9–15 µm in diameter.
