Fissidens termitarum is distinguished by the small plants (to 3 mm), obtuse to rounded leaf apex, usually ending in a clear, sharp cell, crenulate-serrulate leaf margin, border confined to the vaginant laminae (1/2-2/3) of the subtending and perichaetial leaves, subpercurrent costa, vaginant laminae 1/2-2/3 the leaf length, mammillose, firm-walled laminal cells, and undivided peristome. This species will likely be found to be more common than the few collections recorded, including in addition to the Amazon and Chiquitano, but also the Chaco. The type collection was made by Herzog in 1907 from Escobitas, in the Chiquitano.
