Notes     (Last Modified On 5/4/2009)
general taxon notes:
Racomitrium anomodontoides is characterized by its robust plants (7–8 cm long) with long branches, broadly ovate-lanceolate leaves with plicate leaf bases and dentate leaf apices, large, elongate, and densely papillose leaf cells, and strongly sinuose cell walls. Racomitrium anomodontoides is one of the common species in China and is often mistaken as R. fasciculare. Noguchi (1974) synonymized this species with R. fasciculare var. atroviride. Our study of this species, by comparing with European and North American materials of R. fasciculare, indicates that Racomitrium anomodontoides is different in branching patterns, leaf shape, and leaf cell papillosity.

Plants robust, up to 7–8 cm long, yellowish green above, brown or dark brownish below, in extensive, loose tufts. Stems creeping or somewhat ascending, sparsely and irregularly branched; central strand absent. Leaves imbricately appressed when dry, erect-spreading when moist, narrowly ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, 4.5–5.0 mm long, plicate at leaf base, slightly concave and keeled above, acuminate and dentate at apex; margins recurved on both sides; costa slender, broader at base, disappearing below the apex; upper and median leaf cells rectangular to elongate-rectangular, 12–30 µm × 5–7 µm, sinuosely thick-walled, with dense and large papillae, often forked, unistratose at margins; basal cells nearly linear-rectangular, 20–60 µm × 5–7 µm, strongly sinuose; alar cells not differentiated, with only one row of rectangular, hyaline marginal cells at the base, 11–20 µm × 9–11 µm, with straight thin walls. Perichaetial leaves smaller than stem leaves, shortly ovate-lanceolate, often secund. Setae erect, reddish brown, 10–12 mm long, smooth, twisted when dry; capsules cylindrical, 2.0–3.0 mm long, brownish; opercula long rostrate; peristome teeth linear, divided to the base, densely papillose. Spores yellowish, 14–20 µm in diameter, densely papillose.
