Notes     (Last Modified On 3/16/2009)
general taxon notes:
Racomitrium laetum is characterized by long, slender, sparsely branched stems, narrowly lanceolate leaves, recurved leaf margins that are usually on one side and extended to 1/3–1/2 the leaf length, and leaf cells unistratose at margins. Racomitrium laetum has been treated as a synonym of Racomitrium heterostichum var. diminutum by Noguchi (1988). However, Frisvoll (1988) treated it as an acceptable species and placed Racomitrium diminutum under its synonymy. Indeed, both species were published by Cardot (1908) in the same treatment. Noguchi (1988) and Frisvoll (1988) considered they were identical, and we have the same opinion, but we follow Frisvoll’s treatment of the taxa at the species level.
