Ecology: Humid lowland (Amazon) to montane forest; on trunk and branches of trees. Elevation: 25-2030 m (Venezuela: 160-1900 m, Colombia: 25-2030 m, Ecuador: 555 m, Bolivia: 160 m). Distribution: Widespread in the Neotropics.

Groutiella apiculata is characterized by the leaves more than 3 times longer than wide, obtuse-rounded leaf apices, short excurrent costa, marginal border from base to 1/3 the leaf length, and smooth to slightly bulging laminal cells. Synonyms include Macromitrium homaloblastum Herzog and G. mucronifolia (Hook. & Grev.) H. A. Crum & Steere.
 
Groutiella apiculata se caracteriza por tener las hojas más de 3 veces más largas que anchas, ápices de las hojas obtuso-redondeados, costa corto excurrente, borde marginal desde la base hasta 1/3 del largo de la hoja, y células de la lámina lisas a escasamente abultadas.
