Plants small, green to yellowish green, yellowish brown when old, loosely spreading, in interwoven patches. Stems procumbent, 3 cm long, regularly pinnately branched; branches ca. 1 cm long; paraphyllia sparse, lanceolate, often branched. Stem leaves variable, appressed when dry, broadly ovate, cordate to ovate-lanceolate, ca. 0.5–1.0 mm long; margins plane or partly revolute, serrate; costa reaching near leaf apex, smooth on back; median leaf cells pentagonal to hexagonal, thick-walled, uni- to mostly multipapillose; apical cells triangular to rhomboidal, smooth or finely papillose; branch leaves widely ovate-lanceolate, costa vanishing below the leaf apex. Perichaetial leaves entire. Setae reddish brown; capsules cylindrical; peristome features the same as those of H. microphyllum (Hedw.) Broth.
