Plants very slender, yellowish green or brownish green, in small loose mats. Stems creeping, up to 3 cm long, regularly pinnately branched or irregularly pinnately branched; branches 3 mm long; central strand present. Stem leaves and branch leaves similar; slightly concave, imbricate on stems when dry, erect-spreading when moist, widely ovate at base, with short lanceolate apices, ca. 0.3–0.6 mm long; leaf margins plane, densely papillose; costa slender, ending at 3/4 the leaf length; median leaf cells rounded hexagonal or hexagonal, 6–12 µm wide, 2- to multipapillose, thin-walled; basal median leaf cells oblong, smooth. Dioicous. Perichaetial leaves ovate-lanceolate. Setae yellowish brown to reddish brown, up to 2 mm long; capsules ovoid; exostome teeth very similar to those of H. triste. Calyptrae covered with sparse, erect hairs. Spores densely and minutely papillose.
