Discussion:

Macromitrium ulophyllum is a robust species with broad, undulate leaves, and long leaf cells that radiate from the costa in distinct diagonal rows. It has isosporous spores, an unusual feature also found regionally in M. dubium, M. leprieurii, M. richardii, and M. microstomum. Macromitrium subcirrosum is similar to M. ulophyllum in size, general aspect, and in having upper leaf cells that sometimes radiate in rows from the costa. It differs from M. ulophyllum in having somewhat narrower leaves and usually strongly tuberculate basal cells. Macromitrium trachypodium Mitt., a northern South American species not yet known from Central America, is also similar to M. ulophyllum in size and overall aspect, it differs in having furrowed capsules, strongly tuberculate basal cells, and weakly serrulate leaf margins.

Protologue: Ecuador. Andes Quitenses, Abitagua (6000 ped.), Spruce n. 94 (NY).

Plants robust, reddish yellow. Stems strongly creeping, branches 2 cm long, weakly tomentose. Leaves keeled, erect‑patent, spirally contorted and undulate above when dry, erect when wet, 6–7 x 1–1.5 mm, oblong‑lanceolate to broadly lanceolate; apices acuminate; margins undulate, evenly and sharply serrate, erect to plane, enlarged basal teeth at leaf insertion absent; costae long-excurrent; upper interior cells 40–60 x 12 μm, in strongly radiating diagonal rows from the costa, elongate‑rhomboidal, incrassate and porose, upper marginal cells linear, forming a distinct border, basal cells 30–70 μm long, long‑rectangular, strongly incrassate and porose, not or very weakly tuberculate. Setae 15–20 mm long, smooth. Capsules 1.5–2 mm long, obovoid to oblong, smooth; opercula rostrate, to 1.5 mm long; annuli non‑revoluble, with fragments adhering to capsule mouth; exostome teeth to 260 μm high, lanceolate, brown, densely papillose, united forming an erect membrane, endostome hyaline, weakly papillose, basal membrane very low to absent, segments linear‑lanceolate, irregularly divided, 200–260 μm high. Spores isosporous, 18–30 μm, lightly papillose, yellow‑brown. Calyptrae mitrate, deeply laciniate, naked, 4 mm long.
