Plants medium-sized to rather robust, ca. 10–30(–50) mm high or higher, dark green or yellowish above, dark brown or purple below, in dense tufts or compact. Stems simple or sparsely branched, with dense rhizoids at base. Leaves dense or sparse, not clearly twisted when dry; lower leaves ovate; upper leaves oblong-lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, ca. 2.7 mm long; margins entire or serrulate above, mostly recurved throughout, bordered by 1–3 rows of linear cells above, by 4–5 rows of cells below; costae percurrent or shortly excurrent, reddish at base; median leaf cells rhombic to hexagonal, 20–50 µm × 10–18 µm, thin-walled; basal cells rectangular or elongate-hexagonal, somewhat thick-walled. Dioicous. Setae 20–30 mm long, reddish brown; capsules horizontal to pendulous, club-shaped, ca. 3 mm long, reddish brown; neck shorter than urn, slender at base; exostome teeth orange below; endostome segments widely perforate; basal membrane ca. 1/2 the height of segments; cilia 2–3, as long as the segments. Spores 12–18 µm in diameter.
