Elevación: 340-4200 m (Colombia: 1695-2500 m, Ecuador: ? m, Bolivia: 340-2645 m). Distribución: Mexico, Centroamérica, Cuba, y norte de los Andes. Ochyra (1991. Hygrohypnum ellipticum is Bryum renauldii (Musci). Fragm. Florist. Geobot.
Bryum renauldii is associated with stream habitats. In Bolivia this species was found at a lower elevation than most other records from the tropical Andes (ca. 1500-2400 m, but as high as 4200 m), and thus should be expected at higher elevations in the country. This species is distinguished by the ovate or nearly oval leaves, obtuse-rounded apex, unbordered margins that are recurved below, and a slender tapering costa that ends well below the apex or is subpercurrent. In plant size and leaf shape this species may be confused with B. limbatum, but that species differs by the broadly acute apex and the percurrent to short excurrent costa. Hygrohypnum ellipticum Thér. is a synonym. The collection from Venezuela is likely incorrect.
