Plants rather large, soft, yellowish green to olive green, brownish green when old, in loose interwoven mats. Stems up to 5 cm long, often irregularly pinnately branched; branches 5–8 mm long; central strand differentiated; paraphyllia absent. Stem leaves different from the branch leaves; stem leaves mostly crisped when dry, erect-spreading when moist, ovate to ovate-triangular from a wide base toward a narrow acumen; leaf margins serrate, revolute above the leaf middle; costa percurrent or slightly excurrent, smooth on back; median leaf cells oval to rounded quadrate, 6–12 µm × 5–6 µm, grossly papillose; apical leaf cells oblong-ovate to oblong rhomboidal; branch leaves about 1/2 the stem leaf length. Dioicous. Dwarf male plants growing on the leaves of female plants. Perichaetial leaves narrowly elongate-lanceolate, suddenly narrowed into a setulose apex, margins serrate above; costa weak and short. Setae reddish brown, about 1.0–1.5 cm long, minutely papillose; capsules cylindrical; opercula long beaked; peristome double; exostome teeth lanceolate, striate at lower portion, finely papillose above; endostome segments nearly as long as the exostome teeth; basal membrane about 2/5 the height of segments; cilia mostly 2. Spores ca. 12–17 µm in diameter, finely papillose.
