The gametophytes of this species are considered highly variable, in part related to the habitat, plants in permanent wet sites tend to exhibit leaves with a thicker costa and laminal cells, where as plants in more mesic but intermittently wet localities have a more slender costa and laminal cells firm but less thickened walls. The Andean collections can be assigned to Hygroamblystegium varium (Hedw.) Mönk subsp. and var. varium. Additional synonyms include Amblystegium fluviatile (Hedw.) Schimp.; A. tenax (Hedw.) C. E. O. Jensen; A. trichopodium (Schultz) Hartman; Hygroamblystegium fluviatile (Hedw.) Loeske; H. humile (P. Beauv.) Vanderpoorten, Hedenas & Goffinet; H. tenax (Hedw.) C. E. O. Jensen. Amblystegium serpens is similar but differs from Hygroamblystegium by the small plants, shorter leaves, to 1 mm or less, and costa extending to half or slightly more the length of the leaf.
