Plants medium-sized, in loose tufts. Primary stems prostrate; secondary stems erect, simple, 2–3 cm high, with dense rhizoids. Lower leaves distant; upper leaves crowded, strongly crisped when dry, spreading when moist, broadly ovate or obovate; margins distinctly bordered by 3–5 rows of elongate cells; costae mostly percurrent or shortly excurrent; leaf cells elliptical or hexagonal, rather thin-walled, clearly porose. Dioicous. Setae 2 per perichaetium, 0.7–1.3 cm long; capsules erect. Calyptrae cucullate, usually hairy.
