Plants small, green to yellowish green above, brown below, in dense tufts. Stems 0.9–1.3 cm long, often dichotomously branched, densely foliate, with rhizoids only at the base. Leaves erect, appressed when dry, ovate-lanceolate, 2.0–3.5 mm × 0.6–0.8 mm, shortly to long acuminate, sometimes keeled above; margins entire, recurved throughout; costae subpercurrent; upper leaf cells irregularly rounded, 6–15 µm × 6–13 µm, thick-walled, with 1–2 low, unbranched papillae per cell; lower cells rectangular or rhomboidal, 20–40 µm × 5–10 µm, thick-walled, porose, smooth, becoming shorter toward margin; alar cells sometimes forming distinct auricles. Gemmae not seen. Goniautoicous. Perichaetial leaves not differentiated. Setae less than 1.0 cm long; capsules emergent or slightly exserted, cylindrical, slightly furrowed in the lower portion of urns when dry, gradually narrowed toward seta; exothecial cells uniform or differentiated in longitudinal bands; stomata superficial; prostome none; exostome teeth in 8 pairs, reflexed when dry, not splitting when old; endostome segments 8, almost as long as the teeth, clearly papillose on both sides. Calyptrae mitrate, not plicate, sparsely hairy. Spores 18–22 µm in diameter, papillose.
