Plants slender, yellowish-green, sometimes tinged with pink or red. Capitulum densely globose. Stems yellow, cortical cells 4-layered, short rectangular, fibrils absent, without pores or rarely with large pores on distal ends. Stem leaves triangular to ovate-oblong, 1.5-2 mm, apex involute-pointed, toothed, margin border narrow, only slightly expanded at base; hyaline cells often 1(2)-divided, fibrillose throughout, on the outer surface with few to many elliptical, ringed, commissural pores, on the inner surface with 3-5 large, round gaps (nearly the width of the cell lumen). Branches in fascicules of 3-4 (2 spreading). Branch leaves crowded and imbricate, ovate, 1.2-2 mm, apex acute to short or long acuminate, concave, somewhat to distinctly involute near the apex; hyaline cells on the outer surface with round to elliptic commissural pores, large toward leaf middle and base, on the inner surface pores few or none to many large round pores throughout; in cross-section green cells narrowly triangular to trapezoidal,, exposed exclusively or more on the inner surface, hyaline cells strongly convex on the outer surface, weakly convex on the inner.
