Plants rather large, usually 2–8 cm high, green to dark green. Stems mostly single. Leaves long-lingulate or oblong-lanceolate, wider above the midleaf, acute at apex, strongly crisped when dry, erect-patent when moist, several spines obliquely on the back; leaf margins mostly bi-toothed, a border differentiated by 1–3 rows of elongate cells; median leaf cells usually subhexagonal, 18–26 µm in diameter; basal cells quadrate or rectangular; costa single, ending below the leaf apex; lamellae 2–6 rows, often 1–3 cells high. Dioicous. Setae reddish brown, 1.5–3.0 cm long, straight; capsules cylindrical, slightly curved; peristome teeth single layer, 32, reddish brown, keeled; opercula conic, long beaked. Calyptrae cucullate, a few spines near the apex. Spores spherical, 12–16 µm in diameter, yellowish green, finely papillose.
