Although there is likely an earlier name for this attractive and robust tufted Sematophyllum, this species it is associated with high montane transition to páramo vegetation where it is often found on the nodes of bamboo. Sematophyllum aureosulphureum is characterized by the robust plants, broadly oblong leaves, 3-4.5 times longer than wide, ca. 0.5-0.7 mm wide, entire margins, straight, abruptly long acuminate apices.
