Plants small, delicate, male and female plants similar, usually 1.0–1.5 cm high, brownish green to reddish brown, in tufts. Leaves lanceolate, upper leaves mostly erect when dry, erect-patent when moist, middle leaves 2.5–3.5 mm × 0.2–0.4 mm, obtuse at apex, slightly sheathing at base, clasping; margins entire; costa rather broad, ending near the apex; ventral lamellae strongly wavy and papillose, usually 8–11 rows, 4–6 cells high, dorsal lamellae short, mostly 1–3 cells high, sometimes smooth; median leaf cells quadrate, 8–10 µm wide; basal cells rectangular, 20–30 µm × 8–10 µm, slightly thick-walled. Dioicous. Perigonia in rosettes, new innovations often growing from the center. Setae reddish brown, straight; capsules single, cylindrical, mostly curved; peristome teeth 32, membrane somewhat high; opercula conic, with short beaks. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth, with several short cilia on the apex. Spores spherical, 12–15 µm in diameter, verrucose.
