Notes:

Ecology: Tepui region. Elevation: 1690-2300 m. Distribution: Endemic to the Guayana Highlands. (Brazil/Venezuela). Assigned to section Acutifolia.

Ecología: Bosque montano de Tepui. Elevación: 1690-2300 m. Distribución: Endémica para Venezuela. Asignada a la sección Acutifolia.

Noteworthy features of the this species according to Crum (1985) include the very narrower leaves, not common for section Acutifolia, the hyaline cells mostly resorbed on both surfaces resulting in an open meshwork occupying most of the leaf with a strong border. Like S. sparsum Hampe the plants are pink growing in dense clumps. Sphagnum pulvinatum is one of nine or ten Spagnum species found on Tepuis.

Plants somewhat robuts, pink. Stem cortex lacking pores. Stem leaves oblong, 1.3-1.8 mm, apex acute and somewhat concave, margins strongly bordered, especially at the base; hyaline cells often 1-divided, largely resorbed on both surfaces or with 1 large, oblong gap (most of the cell lumen) on the inner surface and 2-3 large, rounded gaps (also most of the cell lumen) on the outer surface. Branches in fascicules of (2 spreading), retort cells rather large, with moderately protruding necks. Branch leaves erect or slightly spreading, not noticeable ranked, narrowly lanceolate, 1.6 mm. apex acuminate, margins narrowly bordered by linear cells in 2-3 rows; hyaline cells on the outer surface with 1-4 large elliptic, ringed pores at the corners or along commissures, on the inner surface with pores lacking in the median region, but toward the margins with 2-3 large, rounded pores; in cross-section green cells triangular to trapezoidal, exclusive or broader on the inner surface, hyaline cells strongly bulging on the outer surface, somewhat convex on the inner. Crum 1985.
