Habitat: commonly on moist soil walls by forests in subtropical regions.

general taxon notes:
Pogonatum camusii is similar to P. spinulosum in sharing the similarity of persistent protonemata, but it differs from the latter by much less foliate stems, hairy apices of leaves, and much weaker costa.

2.  Pogonatum camusii(Thér.) Touw   穗发小金发藓   sui fa xiao jin fa xian
J. Hattori Bot. Lab. 60: 26. 1986. Rhacelopodopsis camusii Thér., Monde Pl. ser. 2(9): 22. 1907. Type: Japan. Ryukyu Island, Ferrié s.n.
 
Plants with persistent protonemata, light green, usually in small mats on moist ground. Stems very short, with only 6–7 leaves. Basal leaves scale-like, ovate or ovate-triangular, acuminate, with a few ciliated teeth at margins; upper leaves ovate-lanceolate, lacking any kind of lamellae on dorsal or ventral surface, irregularly ciliate-toothed at apex; margins entire below; costa slender, vanishing below leaf apex; leaf cells rectangular or irregularly hexagonal, thin-walled, 25–60 µm in diameter; lower cells more than 100 µm long, very thin-walled. Inner perichaetial leaves ovate-lanceolate, with hairy flexuose apices, lamellae lacking; margins entire below, remotely ciliate above; costa slender, vanishing below leaf apex. Setae ca. 15 µm long, brown, twisted, densely papillose; capsules without apophyses, brownish green, shortly cylindrical, ca. 2 mm long or longer, with 5 rounded keels in cross section; stomata absent; opercula conical, shortly beaked; peristome teeth ca. 36, broadly lingulate, obtuse at tips. Calyptrae cucullate, with numerous, golden, long hairs. Spores ca. 8 µm in diameter, smooth.
