The type collection was made Lewis (79-2014B, holotype F) in 1979 from the region of Laguna Coipasa on the slopes of Cerro Tata Sabaya (Department of Oruro). Gametophytically his species is similar to A. julaceum (Schrad. ex P. Gaertn., B. Mey. & Scherb.) Schimp., but differs by the absence of a peristome (Shaw 1987). The species was named in honor of William Campbell Steere (1907-1989), prominent 20th century North American bryologist and administrator; as director of the Cinchona mission during the Second World War made important bryophyte collections in Colombia and Ecuador.
