A monotypic genus, S. lorentzii is distinguished by the obovate leaves, strong costa, absence of guide cells, presence of a single stereid band on dorsal side of leaf and a wide band (to 18 rows) of smooth laminal cells along margin in upper half of leaf, giving way to pluripapillose cells in the medial zone of the upper lamina. The genus was originally described as Saitoa R.H. Zander, hom. illeg., and re-named Saitoella Menzel, hom. illeg. (cf. Zander, 1997). The generic name honors the Japanese bryologist Kamezo Saito (1947-), a specialist in the Pottiaceae.

Un género monoespecífico, Saitobryum lorentzii (Müll. Hal.) Ochyra se distingue por plantas pardo-rojizas oscuras, hojas obovadas, costa fuerte, ausencia de células guía, presencia de una sola banda de estereidas sobre el lado dorsal de la hoja y una franja ancha (hasta 18 filas) de células lisas de la lámina a lo largo del margen de la mitad superior de la hoja, dando paso a células pluripapilosas en la zona media superior de la lámina. El nombre genérico (pasado y presente) honra al briólogo japonés Kamezo Saito (1947-), especialista en la familia Pottiaceae.
