Mittenothamnium reduncum is a rather atypical member of the genus, possibly since it is associated with semi-aquatic habitats. This species is characterized by the non-stipitate habit with stems subascending, usually falcate leaves to ca. 1 mm, entire to weakly dentate at apex, variable costa, short and forked to single (even on single leafy stem), thick-walled cells, upper cell ends projecting near leaf apex or on upper half of branch leaves, and alar region undifferentiated to weakly differentiated with few quadrate or short rectangular cells. Hedenäs (2003. Amblystegiaceae (Musci). Fl. Neotrop. 89: 1-108) has provided a full accout of this taxon. Mittenothamnium reduncum has previously been placed in Hygrohypnum and Ctenidium. Hedenäs (2003. Amblystegiaceae (Musci). Fl. Neotrop. 89: 1-108) has provided a full accout of this taxon. Synonyms include Hygrohypnum pelichucense R. S. Williams and Hygrohypnum tequendamense Herzog.

Plants somewhat medium sized, forming mats, rather dull light to dark green. Stems 3-4 cm long, decumbent or subascending, non-stipitate or weakly so, irregularly pinnately branched; in cross-section central strand absent or weak. Leaves usually falcate-secund, erect-spreading, oblong- to ovate-lanceolate, ca. 1 mm long, 0.3 mm wide, concave, apex acute to short acuminate; margins plane, erect to incurved distally, entire to weakly denticulate distally; costae short, variable, single or forked; apical cells rhomboidal, 25-30 µm long, 10 µm wide, often with distal cell ends projecting; median cells linear, 40-75 µm long, 5-6 µm wide; lower and basal cells narrowly oblong-rectangular; alar region little differentiated, few cells short, rhomboidal to subquadrate. Sporophytes not observed in the tropical Andes.

Plantas algo medianas, formando tapices verdes, algo opacas claras a oscuras. Hojas falcado-secundas o no, erecto-extendidas, oblongas- a ovado-lanceoladas, aprox.
