Diagnosis. Plants 1.5-3(4) cm high; Stem and branch leaves similar in size (1.3-1.5 mm), ovate, hooded at apex, with marginal resporption furrow, no membrane gaps at apex back; leaves with few pseudopores on outer surface but numerous round, ringed pores on the inner. Leaf cortical cells (stem and branch) unistratose, fibrils and pores absent. Chlorocysts view in section narrowly exposed on both surfaces. “Because of the somewhat cucullate leaves with resorption furrows at the margins, this species ...belongs to Sect. Sphagnum, although lacking membrane gaps at the back of the apex and fibrils in the stem and branch cortex.” (Crum 2001).

The type collection, from the same locality as S. priceae, is from Provincia Nor Yungas, along a trail above a mining camp (not construction) in secondary high Yungas montane forest The specific epithet is named for the department of La Paz. Assigned to section Sphagnum.
