Distribution: A monotypic genus found in the Himalayas and Afghanistan. It differs from Parrotia in having more stamens and obtuse anthers with erect filaments which open by valves.

Small trees or shrubs. Leaves large, oblong to orbicular; margins crenate. Flowers bisexual, appearing before the leaves and surrounded by large bracts. Calyx gamosepalous, adhering to the ovary. Corolla lacking. Stamens many; filaments short, erect; anthers dehiscing by valves. Ovary bilocular; styles 2. Seed 1 in each loculus.
