18. Spergula L. (spurrey)
Five species,
Europe, Asia, introduced nearly worldwide.
As in Geocarpon,
the flowers in Spergula technically are perigynous with a shallow
hypanthium having the perianth and stamens attached along its rim. However,
this is difficult to observe in most flowers, and these are described below as
though they were hypogynous with a short calyx tube.
