Leaves undivided, margins entire to serrate or lobed, ovate cordate to narrow elliptic, petiolate or sessile. Verticillasters 2-20-flowered in axils of upper leaves. Bracts present, herbaceous or spiny. Flowers white to pink to purple, sometimes cleistogamous. Calyx tubular to campanulate, scarcely bilabiate or regular, 5-10-nerved; teeth 5, subequal; tube internally pilose or bearded at throat. Corolla longer than calyx, bilabiate; upper lip ± straight; tube annulate or not, exserted from calyx or not. Stamens 4, didynamous, anterior pair longer than posterior, included under upper lip of corolla or included within corolla tube; thecae bilocular, spreading, glabrous, or bearded Style with two subequal short lobes. Nutlets trigonous or scarcely so, apically obtuse or truncate.
