General/Distribution : A large genus of over 200 species found in the tropical and the temperate regions except Tropical and South Africa. 3 species have been reported from W. Pakistan but more collecting and work needs to be done on this group.

Plants perennial, spiny. Leaves radical and cauline, divided or not divided; margin toothed to spiny. Umbels simple. Involucre of linear to lanceolate or leaf-like bracts, margin entire to spiny. Flowers bracteolate, sessile. Bractlets linear, pungent. Calyx tube scaly or tuberculate. Sepals lanceolate to oblong, mucronate. Petals emarginate. Stylopodium depressed; styles long. Fruit ellip¬soid to cylindrical; ridges not prominent; vittae obsolete; carpophore adnate to the mericarps. Inner seed face plane to slightly concave.
