Details: Toxicity
:
Grazing of ryegrass is repeatedly reported to cause staggers in cows, sheep, and deer (Wagstaff, 2008). One of the annual species, L. temulentum, is known for toxic seeds that cause human illness as contaminants of grain, although seeds are in some places eaten as food; the inconsistent toxicity may indicate that infection with an endophytic fungus is responsible (Burrows & Tyrl, 2001).
