Some species of this genus contain sesquiterpene lactones suspected to be potentially toxic if sufficiently large quantities were consumed by grazing animals, though toxicity has not been reported; additionally, some species may accumulate nitrate and some contain compounds that are phototoxic in vitro (Burrows & Tyrl, 2001).
